"The Winged Victory of Samothrace"
This striking bronze sculpture takes its inspiration from the celebrated ancient Greek Winged Victory of Samothrace (Nike). The goddess is dramatically portrayed standing against the wind, her finely modelled drapery sweeping across the body and falling in energetic folds around her legs. Her magnificent outstretched wings are particularly well detailed, their layered feathers contrasting beautifully with the smooth, flowing garments. The bronze displays an attractive dark brown-green patina with subtle highlights that emphasise the modelling. Raised upon a richly veined variegated pink marble base. Signed Costa Omiros.
The Winged Victory of Samothrace, also known as the Nike of Samothrace, is one of the great masterpieces of ancient Greek sculpture. Created around the 2nd century BC, it represents Nike, goddess of victory, dramatically poised as though descending onto the prow of a ship. Her powerful wings spread behind her while wind-blown drapery clings to the body, creating an extraordinary impression of movement and energy. Discovered on the Greek island of Samothrace in 1863, the original marble sculpture is now prominently displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris, where its dramatic composition continues to embody triumph, beauty and classical grandeur.

ABOUT
Costa Omiros was a Greek sculptor associated with decorative bronze sculpture during the early twentieth century, particularly works reflecting the Art Deco and Classical traditions. Although biographical information concerning the artist is remarkably scarce, surviving bronzes bearing his signature demonstrate an accomplished approach to the human figure, movement and flowing drapery. His subjects include graceful female figures, dancers and interpretations inspired by ancient Greek mythology and sculpture. Omiros worked in the tradition of producing finely modelled bronzes for the European decorative arts market. Examples signed Costa Omiros occasionally appear on the international art market, including bronzes dating from around the 1930s.
