ABOUT
Charles Sykes (1875–1950) was a British sculptor and illustrator best known for creating the iconic "Spirit of Ecstasy," the bonnet ornament for Rolls-Royce automobiles, introduced in 1911. Trained at the Royal College of Art, Sykes initially worked as an illustrator for magazines such as The Sketch and Woman, blending Art Nouveau and classical influences. His sculptural works often embodied grace and motion, exemplified by the winged figure that became a symbol of luxury and elegance. Sykes continued to work in both sculpture and illustration throughout his life, leaving a lasting mark on British art and automotive history.
