ABOUT

Richard Thuss (1865-1953) was an Austrian sculptor particularly known for his bronzes, especially small decorative Vienna bronzes. Hickmet Fine Arts+3MutualArt+3askart.com+3

He was born in Nuremberg, Germany, but trained in the artistic centres of Vienna, Munich, and his native Nuremberg. Thuss is especially associated with the Argentor Foundry in Vienna; many of his bronzes bear the signature “R. Thuss” along with “Argentor-Wien.”

His subjects were varied: dancers, sporting figures, animals, Orientalist themes, and genre figures. Many works are cold-painted or patinated, showing fine detail and craftsmanship.

Later in life, after about the 1920s-30s, Thuss lived in Cincinnati, Ohio. He died in 1945.

Some of his more notable works include a bronze skier (c1930), a study “Butterfly Dancer,” and dynamic pieces like “Two Men Boxing.”
