"Viking Longboat" by Magnus Aase

A striking 20th-century Norwegian silver model of a Viking longboat, crafted by renowned silversmith Magnus Aase of Bergen. Beautifully stylised in the form of a traditional Norse drakkar, the boat features raised dragon-head prow and stern terminals with intricately detailed scrollwork. One side to the front is adorned with embossed round shields in relief, echoing historical Viking motifs. Crafted in Norway with silver mark 830, the longboat rests on a shaped wooden base, enhancing its presentation.

ABOUT

Magnus Aase (often stamped “M. Aase”) was a distinguished Norwegian silver maker based in Bergen, active from around the turn of the 20th century. He founded his business in 1899He and his brother Knut took over the firm of Theodor Olsen in 1902, and ran both firms side-by-side until the 1950s.

His work is typically Norwegian silver of 830S purity (i.e. 830/1000 silver) though rarer pieces in higher grades such as 925 sterling are documented. His designs often reflect Arts & Crafts / Art Nouveau / Jugendstil influences — notable in repoussé, hammered surfaces, and stylised floral or natural motifs. Items include bowls, spoons, ladles and vases, often highly decorative.

Pieces by Magnus Aase are sought after by collectors of Scandinavian silver; hallmark identification (M AASE, 830S, NM for “Norsk Mønster”) helps establish origin and age.
