ABOUT

HENRI COUTHEILLAS (French, 1862 ~ 1927)

Henri Coutheillas born December 16, 1862 in Limoges and died on October 31, 1927 in Paris, is a French sculptor. Henri Coutheillas was a student of the School of Decorative Arts of Limoges and Paris, knighted of the Legion of Honor, we owe him the famous sculpture of the Oak and the Reed now deposited in Saint-Junien, a Kiss at the Source installed in the garden of the Élysée as well as the monument in memory of Doctor Guinard at the Hôtel-Dieu in Paris .

In 1894, he obtained a 3rd class medal at the Salon of French Artists for a Huntress figure, then in 1897 a 2nd class medal for the group Le Chêne et le Roseau and, in 1900, a 1st class medal for the same group reproduced in marble.

After the Great War, he specialised to some extent in war memorials . His works all follow the same inspiration: a limousine woman, in traditional clothing, is represented alone, generally standing, looking sad, with her head lowered. She is the daughter, sister, widow of the soldier whose name is inscribed on the monument.

He is also the author of the memorial monument to Pierre-André Latreille in Brive and to General Marbot , commissioned by the State for the Louvre museum.

He died on October 31, 1927 in his home in Paris and is buried in Limoges.
