ABOUT

“Angerle” refers to the Austrian sculptor Karl (or sometimes Carl) Angerle, active in Vienna during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and early 1930s. He is best known for small to medium-scale bronze figures, typically of elegant female dancers, athletes, and allegorical nudes, reflecting the sleek, modern aesthetic of the Jazz Age.

Angerle’s bronzes are characterised by elongated proportions, rhythmic movement, and stylised anatomy, often influenced by contemporary ballet, cabaret, and classical mythology. They were usually cast in spelter or bronze and finished with dark brown or green patination, sometimes mounted on onyx or marble bases. Many examples were produced for the Viennese and Parisian luxury market, alongside the work of artists such as Lorenzl, Poertzel, and Hagenauer.

Signed “Angerle” or “K. Angerle,” these sculptures are now sought after by collectors of Art Deco, valued for their refined modelling, sensual elegance, and embodiment of the sophisticated, decorative spirit of interwar European sculpture.
