A magnificent bronze and ivory group of the historical beauty Salammbô looking down with hidden passion as her secret lover wraps his arms around her, imploring her attention. The figure of Matho with deep brown patina contrasting dramatically against the hand carved ivory, silver and cold painted enamel colours of his lover. Signed Theodore Riviere, inscribed ‘Carthage’ and further marked with the foundry Susse Frères.

"Salammbo et Matho" by Theodore Rivière

Théodore Louis Auguste Rivière (French, 1857~1912) Théodore was a French sculptor born in Toulouse. He received traditional training at the School of Fine Arts in Toulouse and at the National School of Fine Arts of Paris. He began his career under the influence of Falguière and Mercié. He worked in bronze and bronze & ivory in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco style. For a time Rivière lived in Carthage, where he completed his two Orientalist groups based on Flaubert’s story of Salammbô, exhibiting them at the 1894 and 1895 salons with great success.
