ABOUT

Harriet Glen, Australian - born mid 20th C

After going to Art School in Newcastle, New South Wales, Harriet Glen taught Art in secondary schools in Sydney, but soon found she could combine early morning trackwork at Royal Randwick Racecourse with teaching. She won the Australian Lady Jockey Championship and by doing so, won a ticket to the UK, where she discovered her artistic ambitions could be realised by marketing her jewellery and sculpture alongside her equestrian activities.

She rode in races all over the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Malta and France, with her racing career culminating with winning the Jersey Vase in the Channel Islands on her own horse, Hollow Tree. Harriet now lives in her farmhouse in Dorset, surrounded by horses, dogs, cats and wildlife.

Artist Statement of Harriet Glen

"I want to portray the very essence of the animal or person: running, leaping, galloping, stalking, playing, concentrating, dozing, striving or just relaxing. I try to convert a fleeting glimpse into a tangible, three-dimensional image, expressing its living presence".
