Jean Sul-Abadie
Jean Sul-Abadie, French (1850 ~ 1890) was a French artist who specialised in bronze sculptures and is associated with the Art Nouveau style, showing strong classical influences in his subject matter and technical execution.
He trained under notable sculptors Jouffroy and Alexandre‐Falguière, both important figures in 19th-century French sculpture. Sul-Abadie made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1872, gaining recognition through exhibition of works that combined mythological themes with the graceful, flowing forms characteristic of Art Nouveau.
Cupid & Venus
Different tales exist about the origin of Venus and Cupid. Some say that Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, had a love affair with Mars, the god of war. Out of this relationship, Cupid was born.
Cupid has attributes from both of his parents. Like his mother he is considered to be the god of love, or more precisely, the god of falling in love. He is portrayed as an innocent little child with bow and arrows. He shoots arrows to the heart, awakening a love that you’re powerless to resist. From his father, however, he was bestowed with a mischevious nature, as can be seen in the subject of this sculpture where Venus has had to take away Cupid's bow to curtail its overzealous use.
Venus is the Roman goddess whose functions encompassed love, beauty, sex, fertility, prosperity, victory, and desire. In Roman mythology, she was the mother of the Roman people through one of her sons, Aeneas, who survived the fall of Troy and fled to Italy. Julius Caesar claimed her as his ancestor. Venus was central to many religious festivals, and was revered in Roman religion under many titles.
