ABOUT

Image

John Edward Singer (1851–1942) was a distinguished English bronze sculptor and art founder associated with the thriving artistic metalworking tradition of the late 19th century. Based in Frome, Somerset, he was closely linked with the firm Singer & Sons, later known as Singer of Frome, one of Britain’s most respected art foundries.

Originally trained as a watchmaker and silversmith, Singer developed exceptional technical skill in metal casting, which he applied to sculpture during the Victorian era. His foundry became renowned for producing high-quality bronze works for leading sculptors, including public monuments and decorative art. The firm collaborated with prominent artists of the period and played a significant role in advancing lost-wax casting techniques in Britain.

Singer’s legacy rests both on his own sculptural work and on the international reputation of the Singer foundry, which helped shape British bronze sculpture during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
