"Hippo Bookends" French Bronze
This charming pair of French bronze bookends, dating to circa 1920, feature two finely cast reclining hippopotamuses, each resting with a relaxed yet alert presence. Modelled with gentle naturalism, the rounded forms and softly defined features capture the character of these animals with understated elegance. The warm brown patina enhances the surface detail, lending depth and a pleasing tonal richness to the bronzes.
Each figure is mounted upon a substantial block of variegated marble, its creamy amber hues and natural veining providing a refined contrast to the darker metal above. The symmetry of the opposing forms creates both balance and decorative harmony. Combining function with sculptural appeal, these bookends reflect the enduring charm of early 20th century French decorative arts.

ABOUT
French Bronze
French Bronze
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, France stood at the forefront of bronze sculpture production, supported by a network of highly skilled and prestigious foundries. These ateliers—such as Ferdinand Barbedienne Foundry, Susse Frères Foundry, and Fonderie Siot-Decauville—played a crucial role in translating artists’ models into finely finished works of art.
The period saw the continuation of traditional lost-wax (cire perdue) casting alongside sand casting, with both methods employed to achieve exceptional detail and surface refinement. Foundries often worked in close collaboration with sculptors, including animaliers and academic masters, ensuring that the integrity of the original model was preserved. Editions were sometimes carefully controlled and marked, with stamps or signatures indicating the foundry, adding both authenticity and desirability.
Barbedienne, in particular, became synonymous with high-quality reductions and casts after leading artists such as Antoine-Louis Barye, producing works that combined precision with rich, hand-applied patinas. Similarly, Susse Frères earned renown for its technical innovation and its use of the lost-wax process, casting works by leading sculptors of the Art Nouveau and early Art Deco periods.
These bronzes often feature finely chased surfaces and a wide palette of patinas, from warm browns to deep greens, enhancing both form and mood. Today, French bronzes from this era are highly prized for their craftsmanship, historical significance, and enduring aesthetic appeal, representing a golden age of collaboration between artist and artisan.
