"Rearing Cobra" by Daum

£850
£850

This striking pâte de verre sculpture by Daum depicts a rearing cobra poised in a moment of alert tension. The sinuous body rises elegantly from a coiled base, the flared hood and lifted head conveying both grace and latent power. Executed in rich, translucent green tones, the glass reveals subtle variations that enhance the naturalistic texture of the scales and the curvature of the form. The softly granular surface, characteristic of the pâte de verre technique, diffuses light beautifully, adding depth and atmosphere. Both dramatic and refined, the piece exemplifies Daum’s ability to transform nature into sculptural artistry.

ABOUT

Daum Glass

Founded in 1878 in Nancy, France, Daum began as a modest glassworks established by Jean Daum. Initially producing utilitarian wares, the firm rapidly evolved under the direction of his sons, Auguste and Antonin Daum, who embraced the flourishing Art Nouveau movement. By the late 19th century, Daum had become one of the leading artistic glassmakers in France, renowned for its cameo glass, acid-etched decoration, and naturalistic designs inspired by flora and fauna.

Working alongside artists of the École de Nancy, including Émile Gallé, Daum developed a distinctive style characterised by layered glass, intricate carving, and subtle coloration. In the early 20th century, the firm adapted to the emerging Art Deco aesthetic, producing sleeker, more geometric designs while maintaining exceptional technical standards.

A major innovation came with the development of pâte de verre, a technique revived and refined by Daum to create sculptural works with soft, textured surfaces and rich translucency. This process became central to the company’s identity in the modern era.

Today, Daum continues to collaborate with contemporary artists and designers, producing limited-edition sculptures and objects that combine traditional craftsmanship with modern creativity. From its Art Nouveau origins to its current position as a leader in artistic glass, Daum remains synonymous with innovation, quality, and French decorative excellence.
