"Suzon" by Auguste Rodin
An impressive Art Nouveau bronze bust depicting Suzanne Valadon, an artist’s model and later a notable painter in her own right. Created in the early 1880s, the work reflects Rodin’s interest in psychological depth and naturalistic detail rather than idealized beauty. The bust emphasizes subtle facial modeling and an introspective expression, capturing individuality and inner life. Suzon is significant both as a portrait of an important figure in the Parisian art world and as an example of Rodin’s move toward expressive realism that helped define modern sculpture. The bronze with fabulous hand chased surface detail and excellent rich brown patina. Raised on a marble base, titled and signed A Rodin

ABOUT
Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) was a French sculptor widely regarded as the founder of modern sculpture. Rejecting academic conventions, he emphasized naturalism, emotional expression, and the dynamic treatment of the human form. Rodin gained early recognition with The Age of Bronze and later produced major works including The Thinker, The Kiss, and The Burghers of Calais. His monumental project The Gates of Hell influenced much of his later output. Although controversial in his lifetime, Rodin’s innovative approach reshaped sculpture, bridging traditional realism and modern artistic expression.
