"Art Nouveau Bust" by Jef Lambeaux
This elegant Art Nouveau bronze bust presents a refined female figure captured in a moment of serene poise. The head is turned gracefully to one side, the softly modelled features conveying calm confidence and quiet contemplation. Flowing hair is rendered with expressive movement, contrasting with the smooth, polished planes of the face and torso. The sculptor has achieved a harmonious balance between naturalism and stylisation, with subtle detailing enhancing the figure’s classical beauty. The warm brown patina enriches the surface, highlighting the contours and depth of the form. Raised on a richly veined green marble base, the piece combines sculptural sophistication with decorative appeal. SIgned Jef Lambeaux

ABOUT
Jef Lambeaux
Jef Lambeaux (1852–1908) was a prominent Belgian sculptor whose work bridged the late 19th century academic tradition and the emerging Art Nouveau movement. Born in Antwerp, he trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts before continuing his studies in Paris, where he absorbed classical influences alongside contemporary artistic trends.
Lambeaux became known for his dynamic compositions, expressive modelling, and often sensual subjects. His works range from public monuments to smaller decorative bronzes, many of which depict mythological, allegorical, or female figures rendered with flowing lines and naturalistic detail. His most famous work, The Temple of Human Passions in Brussels, reflects both his ambition and his fascination with the human form.
Although not strictly Art Nouveau, Lambeaux’s fluid style and emphasis on movement align with the period’s aesthetic. Today, his sculptures are valued for their vitality, craftsmanship, and expressive character.
