ABOUT
John Skeaping (1901–1980) was a British sculptor celebrated for his elegant, dynamic depictions of animals, especially horses. A founding member of the modernist group associated with the early Tate circles, he was married briefly to fellow sculptor Barbara Hepworth, with whom he shared a commitment to direct carving. Skeaping worked in stone, wood, and bronze, combining anatomical accuracy with a graceful, streamlined modern style. Throughout his career, he exhibited widely and became a respected teacher at the Royal College of Art. His sculptures capture both the physical power and quiet dignity of animals, making him a defining figure in 20th-century British sculpture.
