" Hutschenreuter Art Deco Vase" designed by Friedrich Spahr

An elegant Hutschenreuter Art Deco porcelain vase of baluster form, finished in vivid cobalt blue. The surface is finely overlaid in silver with stylised cranes standing beneath a ginkgo branch, creating a refined, balanced composition. The applied silver overlaid decoration with storks amongst trees by Friedrich Spahr contrasts beautifully with the rich blue ground, exemplifying sophisticated early twentieth-century design.

ABOUT

Friedrich Wilhelm Spahr, German, 1900–1945

Friedrich Wilhelm Spahr was born in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany, in 1900 and became an important exponent of decorative silver overlay during the Art Deco period. He is believed to have learned the specialist technique while working with Friedrich Deusch in Schwäbisch Gmünd.

In 1937, Spahr established his own manufactory, Spahr & Co., Silberbelagwaren-Fabrik, in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The company specialised in applying finely worked silver overlay to high-quality glass and porcelain, creating distinctive geometric and stylised decorative designs.

Spahr used blanks produced by respected manufacturers, including Hutschenreuther porcelain. His characteristic silver-overlay pieces are now particularly sought after by collectors of German Art Deco and 20th-century decorative arts.

Hutschenreuther Porcelain

Hutschenreuther was established in Bavaria in 1814 and became one of Germany's most respected porcelain manufacturers. Renowned for its high-quality porcelain and elegant designs, Hutschenreuther wares provided an ideal foundation for the distinctive silver-overlay decoration produced by Friedrich Wilhelm Spahr.
