Bohemian Amethyst Glass Goblet
This finely crafted Bohemian glass goblet displays a striking amethyst-coloured casing over clear crystal, creating a rich contrast of tone and brilliance. The elegant lidded form rises from a faceted stem and square base, reflecting the precision and craftsmanship associated with Bohemian glassmaking. The body is intricately cut with geometric patterns, framing an engraved oval panel depicting a classical building and landscape scene, delicately rendered in the clear ground beneath the coloured overlay. ABOUT
Bohemian glass, produced in the regions of present-day Czech Republic, has long been celebrated for its clarity, craftsmanship, and decorative richness. During the 19th century, Bohemia emerged as one of Europe’s leading centres of glass production, rivalling France and England. Advances in technology, particularly the development of high-quality lead crystal, allowed Bohemian makers to produce glass of exceptional brilliance and hardness, ideal for intricate cutting and engraving.
A defining feature of 19th-century Bohemian glass was its use of coloured overlays. Clear crystal bodies were cased in vibrant layers—ruby, cobalt, emerald, and amethyst—which were then cut back to reveal contrasting designs. These pieces often featured deeply engraved scenes, heraldic motifs, or classical landscapes, reflecting the period’s fascination with historicism and romantic imagery. Workshops in regions such as Nový Bor and Karlovy Vary became renowned for their precision and artistry.
Moving into the early 20th century, Bohemian glass adapted to changing tastes. While traditional cut and engraved wares remained popular, new influences such as Art Nouveau introduced more fluid, organic forms and subtle decoration. By the 1920s and 1930s, the Art Deco movement brought a shift toward geometric design, bold colour contrasts, and streamlined shapes.
Throughout both centuries, Bohemian glass maintained a balance between technical excellence and artistic innovation. Its combination of vivid colour, detailed craftsmanship, and decorative appeal ensured its continued popularity with collectors and patrons worldwide, securing its place as one of Europe’s most important glassmaking traditions.
